Ah, black leggings. The staple of our ever-growing athleisure collections.
I’ve worn black leggings for everything from running a half marathon, to yoga teacher training, through the first trimester of pregnancy, to moving, physical therapy, barre class, spin class and long car rides.
Is there any part of a woman’s wardrobe that works harder? Well, except for maybe denim?
I’ve tried many different pairs at varying price points over the years. Everything from Forever 21’s $7 see-throughs to The Gap’s classic crops to LuluLemon’s Hi-Rise Wunder Unders; but that perfect, go-to pair always seemed to elude me. Until now.
For me, the search is over. None have ever come close to being as good as these: Zella Live In High Waist Leggings. O. m. g.
I found them early last year after an exhaustive search. I’d never really thought to check out Nordstrom, not sure why, but there they were. Sitting on the site with nearly 4,000 glowing reviews, ripe for the taking.
Here’s what I love about them:
If we’re acquainted in real life, or you’ve read anything I’ve written in the past, it’s likely that you’re familiar with my abhorrence of muffin top. It wasn’t until high waisted anything came around that I finally understood that there was nothing wrong with my body, I’d just been wearing the wrong style of pants my entire life. (The early 2000s were a particularly difficult era for me.) These leggings are the perfect rise for my body. They nestle comfortably just above my belly button and stay put, like a supportive hug for my body image.
Nice and matte, just the way I like it. I’m not into wearing shiny things. Being distracted by them? Sure. But not wearing them on my lower half. Well, unless we’re talking sequins maybe.
They’re thick too so there’s zero nervousness about bending over. And they’re soft and breathable, which is tops for exercise.
The price point
At $54 they’re not necessarily cheap but, they’re also not crazy expensive compared to some of the higher end black leggings that will run about double that price.
So far, they have yet to pill or rip or wear out and I’ve worn these guys a lot. Like, a lot, over the past year. They’ve held up really well. So well, in fact, that I plan to acquire a pair of their cropped version this Spring as well.
Black leggings are truly majestic creatures, but finding the right pair can be a challenge. If you haven’t given these Zella bad boys a try, I highly suggest it. Let me know what you think!
