Are You Half Assing Your Life?

You ever feel like you’re never doing anything full-assed?

Last night I was watching Aziz Ansari’s show, Master of None. (The title I’m now finding ironic, although I’m not sure I ever use the term “ironic” correctly. Does anyone really?)

Anyway, I kept catching myself reaching for my notebook. I wanted to write a to do list for today. To write a grocery list. To review my notes from a copywriting course I just took. Jot down blog ideas.

I wanted to do everything except watch Aziz Ansari. Even though I actually did want to watch the show.

I kept mentally slapping my wrist. Stop it. Just watch the damn show, I kept telling myself. Because I’ve been trying to do one thing at a time lately. It’s proving to be worth it for sure but, harder than I thought. Harder, because I, like you, have been indoctrinated to multitask aka half-ass all things in this life.

Think about it…

  • Must be comfortable in a fast-paced environment with the ability to multitask

That line was in the description of every job I’ve ever had. We’re trained to multitask. It’s a coveted skill. You never see a job description that reads:

  • Must be comfortable working slowly and surely with a strong ability to do one thing at a time

And I realized recently that I’m legitimately never doing one thing at a time. I mean, are you?

Look, ma! I can answer the phone, sign off on a trip sheet, tell my boss his 1:32 pm meeting has arrived, listen to my coworker’s story about her 2-year-old saying ‘poop’ and finish my kale Caesar salad …. all at once!

If you’re anything like me, I bet you’re really good at doing a whole bunch of shit half-assed. But one thing at time? Not so much.

You do a bunch of things at once but you never really do anything at all.

  • You kind of talk to your roommate while double tapping @thefatjewish
  • You sort of eat your breakfast while reading TheSkimm
  • You sometimes pay attention to Scandal while looking at a set of wedding photos (of someone you don’t actually know in real life) on Facebook
  • You listen to podcasts while commuting to work (Okay, this one I’m cool with.)

You get the picture.

I’m not being judgy here at all. I couldn’t even watch TV last night. I had to multitask on the couch at 10:00 p.m., when I don’t even technically have a job.

Who am I kidding? I’m not that busy. Or important.

And Bridget and I believe that in order to get what we want in life – which is to be happy, all the other stuff is really just an attempt at being happy – we need to slow the f down. Start doing one thing at at time. Stop pretending we’re so busy and important. Because we’re not. And I hate to break it to you, but you’re not either. No offense

I mean, we’re all busy for sure. But the point is that we choose to be. What I’m saying is that we could choose not to be. And we should, because we’re missing out on life by never fully engaging in the present moment.

We can stop multitasking and start singletasking instead.  Call me batshit but, I think a lot of our stress, discontent and irritation in life – and those extra ten pounds – stem from the fact that we’re running around like crazy, multitasking and half-assing our lives instead of slowing down and fully living them. We don’t taste our food or hear our friends.

So what if we said ‘no’ to multitasking and did less but better stuff with our time? That’s what I’ve been trying to do and it’s really, really nice. Hard to do. But nice. I feel very Zen.

If so, here’s how you can start to change that:

  • Put your phone away and give your friends your full attention over drinks.
  • Close your laptop, turn off the TV and eat your dinner.
  • Just sit there and eat it. Tina, eat your food.
  • Do one thing at at time, like the dishes. Just focus on the warm water and the plate in your hands.

We hear it a lot, the whole “focus on the present moment” thing. So much so that our eyes and ears just glaze right over the term now. But that’s what we’re talking about. Focusing on the present moment.

What would your life be like if you gave it a try? Would you lose that weight? Be happier? Richer? Less stressed? Or at least know what actually happened in the show you were just watching?
