weekend reads

Well, well, well looks like we’ve got a long weekend on our hands! I’m laying low, catching up on work, perhaps hitting the beach with Lucy if the weather allows. Oh and deeeeefinitely shopping for plants.

Any fun plans on your end? In the case you’re heading out of town and need some entertainment for travels, here’s what we’ve been getting into this week.

Good news! It’s commencement speech season! I love a good commencement speech. Maybe because mine was so shitty? Apparently the guy who was supposed to deliver it never showed, so some rando had to step in and the result was less than satisfactory. This Washington Post article is a nice summary of this year’s advice. Oprah’s in particular (obviously): You need to know this: Your job is not always going to fulfill you,” she said. “There will be some days that you just might be bored. Other days you may not feel like going to work at all. Go anyway, and remember that your job is not who you are. It’s just what you are doing on the way to who you will become. With every remedial chore, every boss who takes credit for your ideas — that is going to happen — look for the lessons, because the lessons are always there.

I won’t lie to you. Why happiness is hard to find in the brain on Nautilus took me three starts to read all the way through. It’s like I see the word “neuroimaging” or any biology-related term and just give up. But when you get into it, you learn that even scientific techniques for achieving happiness aren’t straightforward. Happiness, something everybody experiences, everybody wants, and everybody feels they understand, is far more complicated than we give it credit for.

Have you heard about Michael Pollan’s new book, How to Change Your Mind? I’m looking forward to reading it, but for now I’m digging his NY Time’s piece, which delves into the use of psychedelics and the potential they hold to help people shift their perspectives and let go of old habits.

Never one to resist an astrological determination of how my life might turn out, I naturally jumped on this one from Well + Good about how to be happier according to your sign. Nothing new for this Sag (loves a good trip), but I’ll take any justification I can get to peek at Google Flights.

Speaking of trips, on my recent one to Charleston (THE FOOD OMG) I had a carrot dish that I’d probably write a 5,000 word essay about if you guys would read it. I’ll spare you, but this recipe on Cup of Jo with burrata and salsa rustica looks real equally mouth watering.

Ok that’s a wrap. It’s not looking like it will be full of sunshine, so hope the weekend brings you lots of other good stuff. Catch ya on the flip!
